How to Care for Your Silk Sarees: Keep the Shine Alive

Silk sarees, especially Banarasi weaves, are timeless treasures that deserve special care. Their delicate fabric and intricate zari work require gentle handling — but with the right care, your saree can remain as radiant as the day you bought it.

Here’s a simple guide to preserving the beauty of your silk sarees for years to come:

1. Dry Clean Only (Mostly)

Silk is a natural, delicate fabric. The safest way to clean it is to dry clean only — especially for pure silk or zari-heavy sarees. Avoid home washing unless the saree is explicitly marked as washable.

2. Store with Care

  • Always fold your saree with the zari facing inward to prevent tarnishing.

  • Wrap in a muslin cloth or pure cotton fabric to allow the silk to breathe.

  • Avoid plastic covers — they trap moisture and cause the fabric to yellow over time.

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity.

3. Refold Regularly

To prevent permanent creases or tearing along fold lines, refold your saree every 3–6 months. This keeps the fabric and zari evenly distributed and reduces stress on the threads.

4. Avoid Perfumes & Sprays

Never spray perfume or deodorant directly on your silk saree. The chemicals can stain or weaken the fabric. Instead, apply your scent before draping the saree.

5. Iron with Caution

  • Use a low-heat silk setting or steam iron.

  • Always iron on the reverse side or place a thin cloth between the iron and saree.

  • Never use a hot iron directly on zari work — it can melt or dull the shine.

6. Air It Out

If your saree has been stored for a long time, air it out in indirect sunlight for a few hours. This helps freshen it up and prevent any musty odors or fungal growth.

Bonus Tip: Travel-Friendly Packing

When packing your saree for travel, place tissue paper between folds to reduce friction and wrinkles. Use a soft saree bag or cloth pouch for extra protection.
